Cardiff Capital Region
Cardiff Capital Region covers ten local authorities across south-east Wales and are: Blaenau Gwent; Bridgend; Caerphilly; Cardiff; Merthyr Tydfil; Monmouthshire; Newport; Rhondda Cynon Taff; Torfaen; and the Vale of Glamorgan. As well as being home to the capital city of Wales and the neighbouring city of Newport, the region boasts numerous key towns such as Abergavenny, Cwmbran, Barry, Pontypridd and Ebbw Vale.
Cardiff alone attracts 20 million visitors per year (pre-lockdown) and is one of the youngest cities in Europe. The capital provides an impressive retail offering and is home to a picturesque castle and the world famous Principality Stadium.
Plans are underway to create a Metro transport system that will connect all the major towns with Cardiff. Stretching from Maesteg and Bridgend in the west, north to Merthyr Tydfil and eastwards to Monmouth and Chepstow, the integrated transport system will include a combination of trains, buses and light rail and will have a positive social, economic and environmental effect.
Cardiff Business
Cardiff Capital Region is the largest city-region in Wales and this powerhouse accounts for approximately 50% of the total economic output of the Welsh economy, 49% of total employment and has over 38,000 active businesses. The metro population area of Cardiff is 478,000 and Newport is the fastest growing city in Wales. Both cities have enjoyed significant regeneration and investment over recent decades.
The public sector, education and health are some of the biggest employers in Cardiff but other major companies in the region include Airbus, Admiral, the BBC and The Royal Mint.
The area is home to a variety of business clusters with significant international and indigenous businesses across sectors such as: financial services; creative and digital industries; advanced manufacturing; life sciences; energy; and energy supply.
